Information for exchange students at THWS

For exchange students it is not always easy to understand how a foreign university works, what rules need to be followed and where and how to find the most suitable courses. This page wants to improve this situation and enable you to choose the right courses before coming to Germany.

In order to avoid unpleasant surprises at the start of your semester at our university, we will check the chosen courses in your Learning Agreement (LA) before your arrival. This means on the other hand, that we will only accept your application if you submit a fully completed LA.

Thus prepared, you will be able to attend your courses from the first week on, which is highly recommended to avoid organizational problems.

General information

  1. Even if you are enrolled at the Faculty of Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, it is possible to take courses from all other faculties and degree programmes. The Faculties of Mechanical (FM), Electrical (FE) and Business Engineering (FWI) and partially also the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Humanities (FANG) are located in Schweinfurt, all others are in Würzburg. We advise you to take only courses from Schweinfurt.

  2. In German degree programmes, all courses, laboratory internships and exams are in German. No exceptions can be made. For courses from other degree programmes that are offered by our faculties in English, please check the information material about them.

  3. Before filling out your LA, make sure to read the guideline below.

  4. Most of the courses are offered only once a year, either in the winter or summer semester. To find out when they take place, please check the study plan of the corresponding degree programme and the guideline down below.

  5. Several courses have been merged into modules with only one exam at the end. That means you will find individual courses by different professors, but at the end of the semester there will be just one exam for all these courses together. You cannot get an individual exam for just one course out of a module.

  6. Most degree programmes have so-called specialisations, consisting of several modules. Students with settlement in Germany have to decide on a specialization the semester before it actually takes place. Exchange students are exempted from this rule. However, if there are too few people electing a specialisation, it will not be offered. This is usually only determined three to four months in advance. Furthermore, it is not recommended to choose modules from different specialisations, as they usually take place at the same time.
