Laboratory for Wear- and Corrosion-Resistant Materials

Corrosion and wear are the main mechanisms of damage, and no technical product is immune to them.

The Laboratory for Wear- and-Corrosion Resistant Materials combines topics from the fields of ceramic materials, corrosion protection and tribology. The objective is to protect materials and components from environmental influences, mechanical stresses, aggressive media and operating conditions for as long as possible and to identify damage mechanisms.

We offer project partners attractive opportunities for cooperation in joint research and development projects. We provide support in overcoming specific challenges and developing innovative solutions that increase the competitiveness of our partners.

Main areas of work and training

  • Stainless steels
  • Hydrogen diffusion and hydrogen damage / hydrogen embrittlement
  • Atmospheric corrosion
  • Technical application of ceramic materials
  • Wear- and corrosion-resistant coatings
  • Electrochemical corrosion measurement
  • Long-term exposure tests

Laboratory experiments

Various laboratory experiments are offered to THWS students on a rotating basis.

These give students the opportunity to actively and independently conduct laboratory experiments on selected topics:

  • Manufacturing components from technical ceramics
  • Electropolishing of passive materials
  • Electrochemical corrosion measurement
  • Characterisation of surfaces and coatings in heavy corrosion protection (based on FROSIO training / coating inspector)

We are happy to answer any technical questions and discuss exciting topics.

Location

This diagram shows the location plan for the rooms of the Laboratory for Wear- and Corrosion-Resistant Materials on the ground floor of Building 3, which can be reached via the north entrance of the building or via the main entrance or the passage between Buildings 3 and 4. From the main entrance, a short flight of stairs or the disabled lift leads to the right into Building 3. The rooms of the Laboratory for Wear- and Corrosion-Resistant Materials are located in the second corridor on the left behind the ninth and tenth doors on the right-hand side.
