General information about studying abroad
A semester abroad can be a special highlight of your studies. However, you should prepare it carefully and start planning early enough. It is particularly important that you clarify the following questions for yourself:
- What language will be used for teaching at the university abroad? Is my language level good enough to follow classes and write exams?
- Can I (financially) afford to study abroad?
- What will happen to my apartment during my studies abroad?
- Have I completed all the necessary formalities (e.g. health insurance, re-registration at the THWS) or do I know which formalities still need to be completed before or during my studies abroad (the International Office - HSIN can help here)?
- Does my personal situation allow for a longer stay abroad?
- Can I continue my studies at THWS without delay after studying abroad (visit the e-learning course for more information on this, see below)?
Education system of the guest country
Depending on where you want to go, you should first familiarize yourself with the characteristics of the education system there. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) (German-language) provides various information on its website. The semester and examination periods can be particularly important here.
Choosing a university
We recommend that you inform yourself thoroughly and at an early stage about the universities that interest you. You should not only pay attention to the location of the university (large city or rural area, ...), but also to which degree programmes and course content are offered in which language.
Personal advice
Please inform yourself first via this website and in the e-learning course "Auslandsstudium" (Studying abroad; bilingual - German and English). Afterwards, you can arrange a consultation appointment with our International Affairs Officer at any time via e-mail.
If you have any general questions regarding the application procedure, funding and other formalities, please contact our International Office (HSIN).
